Catalan with the University of Chicago
The University of Minnesota is an active participant in the Big Ten Academic Alliance CourseShare program, which uses technology to send and receive less commonly taught language and culture courses with partner institutions. Sending courses expands the profile of our language and culture programs, and increases and diversifies their audience. Receiving courses provides students with access to courses they need for their academic and career goals, and connects them with students and scholars across the country.
Through this program students can choose from a number of language courses offered throughout the alliance and have the opportunity to continue learning these languages beyond the elementary level. For instance, a University of Minnesota student could take a course in a language such as Czech, Hungarian, Persian, and Turkish, or could continue to intermediate and advanced levels of Dutch, Estonian, Modern Greek, or Polish.

CLA CourseShare is administered by the Language Center, through collaboration with academic departments. Our staff provides support both for faculty teaching in the program and for students enrolling in a shared language course. Students can register for courses received from other institutions through the LANG course subject and request a new course by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
CourseShare overlaps with and supports our other initiatives in the CLA Language Center. Some models of Languages Across the Curriculum may benefit from coursesharing, CourseShare is dependent upon online collaboration across time and distance (hybrid), and these distance courses are particularly apt candidates for innovative assessment methods.
